There are now more than 250,000 seniors in NSW connected to the Internet.
To cater for this rapidly expanding group, dubbed TechnoSeniors by the NSW Government, a Seniors Online strategy will be announced during Seniors Week.
The strategy is a NSW Government initiative that works parallel to the information technology industry to develop niche marketing and business training relationships.
Seniors Online would also look at implementing pilot training programs for the seniors community, negotiating special hardware and software packages for seniors and maintaining research to monitor the changing trends within the over-60 market.
Research by Seniors Card shows that, of the more than one million people over 60 in NSW, 21 per cent own a computer and a further 15 per cent were interested in trying or buying a home computer.
This equated to a potential market of more than $400million.
In response to this, Seniors Week 2001 has extended its TechnoSeniors seminars and workshops to two-day events.
These seminars aim to provide the over-60s market with access to the experts in hardware, online technology, training and tailored education courses.
As part of the Seniors Online strategy, partnerships with sponsors Telstra, Dick Smith Electronics, and Seniors Card would be used to bring technology within easy reach of seniors to provide a comfortable, relaxed environment where a hands-on approach was encouraged.
